Jardim Gramacho, Landfill, Rio de Janeiro

The people from Jardim Gramacho were garbage-collectors.

They were responsible for catching and sorting trash for recycling.

They brought the separated waste to collection points, where it was purchased as price per kilo.

With that money they could more or less survive.

"Catadores" are perceived as a outsider group and often live on the street or in in huts made of wood, cardboard and garbage.

By closing Gramacho, the people lost their jobs and perspectives even they had risked their health working and living there.

(The government of Rio de Janeiro closed the landfill in 2012 and gave the habitants a kind of compensation...

...what was not even adequate for to start a new business.)
